Donald E. Hyson lives in Winnebago, IL and has been a woodworker for most of his adult life. He graduated from Northern Illinois University with a B.S. in Business Management. His work history includes twelve years at Amerock Corporation in Rockford, Il; 7 years at National Lock Corporation, Rockford; and 21 years at Sundstrand Corporation, Rockford. Don retired from Sundstrand in 2000 as an Associate Engineering Specialist assigned to the Space Shuttle program.
Don has a home workshop and spends some of nearly every day working in that shop. His shop is relatively small but well-equipped. He is primarily self-taught, having read numerous books and magazines. Since joining the Northern Illinois Woodturners Club in 2014, he has become passionate about turning decorative wood items. His work includes hand-turned wood plates, bowls, pepper mills, vases and other pieces of art. All his pieces are ‘one of a kind’ and produced primarily of domestic hard woods…oak, walnut, maple, cherry, Chinese elm, ash. Many individual items are embellished with hand-carved inlays or relief carved elements that tend to make his work unique. Don has exhibited and sold his art at various area art fairs including: Art in the Park, Freeport, IL; Greenwich Village Art Fair, Rockford; in Naperville, IL; Riverside, IL; Rockford, IL Temple Beth-El Charity auction; Rockford Art Scene. He is also an active member of the Rockford Art Guild. |
